My statement on the situation in Israel and Palestine

I condemn the brutal killing of innocent Israeli men, women and children and the taking of hostages by Hamas.

The unfolding situation in Gaza is creating a humanitarian crisis and international law needs to be observed: the blockade has reduced access to food, fuel water and medical supplies and now 1.1 million people are being told to relocate from northern Gaza which will cause greater devastation.

It is important to make a distinction between ordinary Palestinians and Hamas.

Humanitarian access is vital and should be prioritised over weapons.

This Government and their international partners must do everything to achieve an urgent ceasefire and a lasting peace.
